Interior Design Career Outlook

Interior designers are responsible for designing both beautiful and functional spaces in offices, homes, shopping malls, restaurants and many more commercial spaces. Designers are now needed to respond to consumer expectations such as making office and home spaces environmentally friendly and easily accessible. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Outlook Handbook, employment for interior designers is expected to grow by 19% between 2010 and 2020. That’s 10,900 new interior design jobs created during that time frame.

The median annual wage of interior designers was $46,280 in May 2010, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Outlook Handbook. Many interior designers work in specialized industries including, architectural, engineering and related service industries. In 2010, 30% were self-employed.
