How to Apply for Financial Aid
Students wishing to apply for financial assistance will be provided with
required forms, including a free application for federal student aid. Students
will have one-on-one consultations to determine the financial arrangement that best
suits their needs and personal situation.
During this consultation process, the Financial Aid Officer will assist
the student in completing all the forms necessary to apply for and
receive financial assistance. In some cases, additional documentation is
required to complete the application process. It is the responsibility of the student
to provide the requested documents in a timely manner to determine and verify
eligibility.
Types of Financial Aid Available
Federal Pell Grants
Funds are awarded to students based on a number of factors including family income and assets, family size, and the number in college. All students who are attending on at least a half-time basis are urged to apply. Federal Pell Grants do not have to be repaid.
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)
FSEOG funds are allocated to STC by the federal government, and priority is given
to students who receive Federal Pell Grants. Funds are awarded to students
with exceptional financial need. An FSEOG is an award that does not have
to be repaid.
Subsidized Federal Stafford Loan
A Subsidized Federal
Stafford Loan is a low-interest loan made by a lender such as bank, credit union, or
savings and loan association to our students. The loan is re-insured by the government to maintain low interest rates and flexible terms. The federal government pays the interest during the period of school attendance and for a six-month grace period following school attendance as well as approved periods of deferment. Eligibility for a Subsidized Stafford Loan is based on financial need.
Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loan
An unsubsidized Federal
Stafford Loan is a low-interest loan made by a lender (bank, credit union, or
savings and loan association) to independent students. The Department of Education
guidelines will determine the dependency status. A student does not have to
demonstrate financial need in order to obtain this loan.
Federal PLUS Loan
Federal PLUS Loans are low-interest loans
made by a lender (bank, credit union, or savings and loan association) to the
parents of a dependent student. The loan application is subject to lender
credit approval.
Private Alternative Loan Programs
Southern Technical College maintains a relationship with a variety of non-federal, private lenders in order to provide students additional flexibility in tuition payments. The financial aid office will work with students and parents to identify loan programs that will meet the student's financial needs. Please contact the financial aid office to determine if you are eligible for any of our private loan programs.
Scholarships
Southern Technical College participates with various scholarship programs
which provide additional financial assistance to those who qualify. The
scholarships do not need to be repaid. Applications for the various types of
scholarships are available at the Financial Aid Office.
